A year after the death of Adam Lassaux, hope of Biterrois rugby, his parents are experimenting for the first time

A few days before the anniversary of Adam’s death in a road accident, his family learns that the driver will play rugby again when he had assured the opposite in front of his judges.

Adam Lassaux was a hope for Biterrois rugby. He died following a very serious road accident in Lamalou, on the night of July 2 to 3, 2021. His lifelong friend was driving the vehicle which hit a plane tree. He was drunk during the accident. He was sentenced to a heavy prison sentence a few weeks after the events. He appealed the quantum of the sentence and finally received, on December 23, 2021, a sentence of thirty months in prison and twelve months suspended probation.

Adam’s parents, Maroussia and Gregory had chosen not to comment on this drama. On the eve of the perpetrator’s release, they expressed their resentment.

“We learned by chance that he was coming out of detention, on parole on July 1. We were prepared for it, confirming Maroussia and Grégory. On the other hand, we do not accept that he can resume rugby. He would have signed a contract with Usap. On appeal, the defendant asserted that: “Out of respect for Adam, I will not play Rugby again.”

Words that hurt

A broken word that Adam’s parents have trouble accepting.

“With his lawyer, they lied in court. We can’t stand the lie. There’s nothing to say about the sentence. It doesn’t change anything. We can hear that people feel sorry for him. We can hear a lot of things , but this young man, we accompanied him like our children. We do not understand that he never had the idea of asking us for forgiveness. For a year now, each time we take a step forward, we let’s do three back. What really bothers me is the rugby. It’s what united them both.”

“We took a life sentence”

Maroussia was unable to resume her work as a home childminder after Adam’s death. Grégory is in the same psychological state. He resumed his part-time job at the town hall of Bédarieux.

“You should know that our house has been empty since Adam’s death. There is no longer a sound while the three brothers were talking all the time to each other, with us. All four of them, without ever going before a judge , we took a life sanction. He had a one-year break and left as if nothing had happened. We have to understand in survival mode.

“Today, I remain without an answer”

To defend himself, the driver had explained before the court of Béziers that he did not remember anything. He reiterated his remarks on appeal, assuring that Adam would have forced his hand to take the wheel.

“I would have liked to have a discussion with himinsists Gregory. I feel like I don’t know him anymore when we had so many good times with him. Today, I remain unanswered. It’s very hard for me. Rugby conveys values of courage, mutual aid and responsibility. Where are we? I don’t understand why Perpignan takes him.”

The two brothers to move forward

Maroussia and Grégory were now winning over their two other boys to advance. “We do it, but we don’t have a goal. It’s very, very, difficult.”

Today, the couple feels guilty on many points. On the evening of the tragedy, they had organized the rugby party in Bédarieux. “It was a beautiful day. Then at 3 a.m. everything stopped, says Maroussia. This terrible phone call, we went to the scene of the accident. I couldn’t see my son but I comforted the driver. It’s the only night I didn’t text her to find out how she was. There were no more messages. Adam would never have accepted the death of his best friend. He does not even imagine how much I regret that he does not assume today.

Champion of France
