After Cholet’s big victory over Besiktas Istanbul, winning coach Laurent Vila reflects on this success which allows the Maugeois to hope for a qualification in the main round of the FIBA Europe Cup.
On Wednesday night, Cholet comfortably got the better of Besiktas Istanbul (93-62) for their Group D semi-final of the FIBA Europe Cup preliminary round. Faced with a Turkish formation far from ready, Laurent Vila’s team was on the contrary well prepared. What to satisfy the Catalan coach:
“I thought it was a serious game. We had well informed the forces in the presence of this team. We had a little time to get into the defensive rhythm. But once we got into that rhythm and that aggressiveness, we really outwitted them. We worked on it for 40 minutes to make a very serious match. Everyone won. Of course it’s a satisfaction because it was still a goal very early in the season to win this first match and we did it. »
The Maugeois limited their opponents to 34.9% shooting success while causing 21 bullet losses.
“Defensively, on a high level. We imposed what we wanted to do. It is not easy for the benchmarks of the players in what we want to do (Editor’s note: “weak” defense, which sends the players to their weak hand to play picks and rolls), to know if they are left-handed players and right-handed… And finally, there is a good reactivity in relation to that. It’s good, there were good combinations between interiors. Defensively, we dominated the rebound and behind it is easier to play our attack with this wide recovery game. We had a domination of our interiors with Justin (Patton) who had a very successful match and Neal (Sako) who in rotation was very good. We saw Perry (Ellis) take on more responsibility and succeed. So yeah I’m really happy. »
To validate his presence in the main round of the FIBA Europe Cup, Cholet will have to beat the Dutch team of ZZ Leiden, winner of the second semi-final against Czarni Slups, this Friday at 8 p.m., still at the Meilleraie.
