ball – 3×3 European University Championship: Le Havre in search of exploit

Laurent Chamu and his players were hoping for a completely different result than the ninth place obtained in mid-June in Bordeaux during the recent French university basketball 3×3 championships. “We missed each othernotes the coach of AL Aplemont (N1F), but also coach for the university team of the ASUH (Sports Association of the University of Le Havre). We finished in first place in the consolation, which brought together the third and fourth from each pool. But we realized that we hadn’t trained enough. »

For this event, the team is made up of the same players as in Gironde: the interiors of the ALM Montivilliers Patrick Nitu (captain) and Mohamed Ndao, the Gravenchonnais Julien Hébert and the Fécampois Axel Papo. “Compared to other nations, we don’t have any new professionals in our ranks. During our last participation, Pierre Truffert (now Boulogne player, N1) was there and he was already playing with the professional STB team. There is no big leader, but the group is united and has worked well. »

“To do better than in France would be a feat”

Before the second participation of the Le Havre university team in European competition, after the 2019 edition in Portugal where it had climbed to the quarter-finals against Greece, Laurent Chamu remains on his guard. “Some countries make this competition a major issue! I’m thinking of the Croats, the Serbs, Spain… Some universities have professional players sign agreements of sorts so that they can take part in the competition. For example, in 2019 against Greece, two players from their team were under contract with Panathinaikos and were playing in the Euroleague (the biggest European basketball competition), we had hit a wall. To go as far as possible, you will have to be efficient from the group stage. »

The European Championships take place until Wednesday July 20 in Lodz (Poland). The objectives of Le Havre remain measured. “To do better than in France would be a featsays Chamu. A ninth place would already be a great performance. The medal, a dream. We want to do the best we can. »
