This Wednesday, Christophe Urios presented the results of the season for Union Bordeaux-Bègles, eliminated in the semi-finals of the Top 14 last weekend by Montpellier (19-10), and beaten in the round of 16 of the Coupe d Europe via La Rochelle in April. At the end of the season, several tensions appeared between the manager and certain Girondin executives (Jalibert, Woki).
“We will have to manage to find this spark to start againexplained in particular Urios, quoted by Sud Ouest. I think it’s even more true this season that we end up very disappointed. There was a mess. This is the first time in three years that we are going through a difficult period. It should make us progress if we are capable of welding it well, that is to say looking the truth in the face. »
“To go further, I have to change and that’s my summer job”
The Bordeaux technician especially regretted that his team, which had started well at the start of the season, had lacked rigor and consistency since the start of 2022. After several major successes, such as at the Stade Français (18-31), in Montpellier (22-23) or against Lyon (42-10), it inevitably fell, especially at home with six losses in a row against Racing, Pau, La Rochelle (twice) and Toulon.
“We must seek to constantly move forwardcontinues Urios. The group lacked commitment but above all, mental thickness. And that, I want to change. » The manager admitted he hasn’t done everything well this year either. “I think I was too nice, I was not clear and precise enough, not inspiring enough for my staff. I didn’t want to rush the group because it was young. If I had to do it again, I wouldn’t do it this waydid he declare. If I don’t change, at best, we’ll end up in the semi-finals. But to go further, I have to change and that’s my summer job. »
“It remains a successful season, but not optimized. We still have work to do, but I think the club and the advance in general.
Christophe Urios still ended on a positive note, not forgetting that Bordeaux-Bègles was still a neophyte in the final phase two years ago. And he believes that the difficulties encountered in recent months will help the club: “It was a hard, long and unpredictable season. It must help us progress for the future. It remains a successful season, but not optimized. We still have work to do, but I think the club and the progress in general. »
After a big month of vacation, the people of Bordeaux will meet again for the preparation of the season on July 25. They will then have two friendly matches on the program, against Bayonne on August 20 and against Clermont on August 26, before the resumption of the Top 14 on the first weekend of September.
