Injured for most of last season, Damian Lillard returns in 2022-23 with a fairly revamped squad. However, there is already one player who convinced the Oregon superstar. A great performance, considering he was just drafted by the franchise.

A true marathon runner since his debut (nine consecutive seasons with at least 65 games played, including seven with at least 70 games), Damian Lillard experienced a big setback in 2021-22. Injured in the abdominals in addition to having launched his campaign very badly, the leader of Portland found himself blocked in the infirmary from December 31. It has therefore been nine months since he set foot on the court. And when he returns next October, he will discover a roster quite different from the one he has known.

Indeed, its leaders quickly dropped the lost exercise, to the point of trading its lifelong partner CJ McCollum to the Pelicans. The good news is that he will still be able to count on a few nuggets, like Anfernee Simmons for example who will be the new starting back. There is also Shaedon Sharpe, drafted in 7th position by Rip City this summer. It didn’t take long for the rookie to get everyone on board, as Lillard showered him with praise recently:

Damian Lillard under the spell of Shaedon Sharpe

The talent is amazing. When I watch him train, everything is easy for him. Defensively, he manages to recover. I saw him play with Nas Little one on one. Nas kind of outflanked him, got up and countered him at the top of the square. Only a super-athlete can rise like that with another super-athlete. And he did it effortlessly. Offensively, when he dribbles it feels effortless. But I really like his character. He is always calm.

If I was 18 or 19 and made the leap to an NBA team, I don’t know what it would be like. I would probably look crazy. But he fits in and he’s just trying to find his way. He asks questions, he listens, he’s there every day, I think when you put the talent together with the person he is… You don’t often meet players like that. If he develops, I really think he can become a guy who really changes our team. Probably more than anyone else.

It’s what we call being dubbed as a champion for the product out of high school, he who decided to put a wind in the prestigious program of Kentucky to make the jump to the pros. Injured during the Summer League in Las Vegas, however, he seems to have convinced in training, which is a very good thing. Considered for a time as one of the best high school students in the United States, the Canadian-born could well have a great season off the bench. Its highlights are in any case salivating:

Barely arrived at the Blazers, Shaedon Sharpe has already managed to put Damian Lillard in his pocket. With the superstar to supervise him and give him advice, the rookie has what it takes to become a future great in the NBA. That’s all we hope for in any case on the side of its front office.
