(Vancouver) The trial for intentional sexual assault against former Vancouver Canucks forward Jake Virtanen began Monday in Vancouver.
Posted at 2:17 p.m.
Virtanen was in the Supreme Court of British Columbia when Justice Catherine Wedge instructed the 12-member jury.
The 25-year-old Abbotsford native was charged with sexual assault in January, following a police investigation into an incident that allegedly occurred Sept. 26, 2017, when Virtanen was playing for the Canucks.
Vancouver police launched this investigation in May 2021, following a complaint by a 23-year-old woman.
The Canucks suspended Virtanen the same month and his contract was bought out in June 2021.
He then played for Spartak Moscow, of the KHL, and is not incarcerated during the proceedings.
