The French women’s team lost its meeting (64-48) for the bronze medal against Italy. They finish in fourth place in the EuroBasket.
Missed meeting for the French women’s U20 team against the Italian selection. From the start of the match, the tone was set for Les Bleuettes. The Italians, uninhibited, did not refuse a shooting position and quickly imposed their rhythm. A game philosophy that quickly ended up paying off in the second quarter. The French tried to press inside, with Aminata Gueye (6 dots) and Nahan Niare (4 dots). Giula Natali and Ilaria Panzerathe Italian backcourt dominated the debates in the first half by combining 31 points, against 23 for the French.
The latter were quickly overtaken by the offensives of the Nazionale (24-11 in the second quarter). Perhaps they hadn’t recovered from their match yesterday, losing 65-63 to the Czech Republic in the semi-finals. More worrying, the 17 ball losses at half-time, almost their average per game (20). The French were 18 points behind at halftime (41-23).
A badly managed momentum
Upon returning from the locker room, Jérôme Fournier successfully launched Palmire Mbu, who has played very little so far. The referees were not kind to the Bleuettes, whistling Pauline Astier’s fourth foul in the middle of the third quarter. Aminata Gueye showed itself to its advantage, scoring the major part of the points in the third quarter (22 points for the interior). Italy bet on a major five composed of four exteriors in order to make Gueye pay for the lack of mobility in defense. A tactic that proved ineffective because the Bleuettes came back to 14 points at the end of the third quarter (52-38).
Under the impetus of Sara Roumy and thanks to a renewed defensive intensity, France picked up up to seven points in the last quarter. Unfortunately, an unsportsmanlike foul from Mbu and one and one conceded by Gueye put an end to the French women’s momentum. They lost 64-48 against Italy despite better ball management (9 ball losses in the 2nd half). The French women’s team therefore ends its career in 4th place in this EuroBasket 2022.
