36 years. This is how long the players, managers and supporters of Montpellier Hérault Rugby had to wait to claim the Top 14 title. their two lost finals. But now, it’s chosen done: Montpellier is Champion of France.
During this Top 14 final against Castres, the Montpellier residents did not tremble. Strong 29-10 winners, Philippe Saint-André’s players offered themselves a final that remains in the memories of his supporters. Great man of this final, the English Zach Mercer, arrived last summer, savors. “I’m going to sit next to the Bouclier in the locker room, and watch it carefully with the name of Montpellier engraved on it, for the first time in the history of the club. To achieve this for my first season here is just amazing.” he says to Figaro.
Guirado bids farewell
This final will have been filled with emotions. In addition to the historic victory for Montpellier, it was also the swan song for Guillem Guirado, who announced his retirement with great emotion at the end of the meeting. “It’s hard to realize what we just did. What is exceptional is that we mark the history of the club. We can be proud of this group and of everything we have done this season. (…) So now I can stop, I’m starting to get old” affirmed the former captain of the XV of France at the microphone of France Televisions.
This victory comes after a difficult period for the MHR. A year and a half after being relegated, the Hérault club finished at the top of the Top 14, and can be proud of such an achievement. This final was also the occasion for a very nice revenge, after the final lost in 2018 against… Castres.
Montpellier was therefore able to celebrate its title of Champion of France with dignity with its supporters and the people of Hérault this Saturday, June 25, but without Mickaël Capelli, who had taken the wrong TGV. Now it’s time for a well-deserved rest before the recovery…
