Directly qualified as representatives of the host country, Bleus et Bleues will only take care of the qualification process for the Paris Olympics, which the International Federation (FIVB) has just unveiled. On the other hand, they will discover with interest the modification of the formula of the Olympic tournament, announced at the same time “in order to increase the fervor and value of each match played at the Olympics”according to the official press release.
The first round will now be played in three groups of four teams, whereas teams were previously split into two groups of six. The top two from each group and the two best third-place finishers will advance to the quarter-finals. The knockout phase remains avoided.
A formula similar to the basket
This formula is similar to that adopted by the basket during the Tokyo Games last summer. The FIVB does not specify, however, whether the quarter-finals will be determined by a draw.
Less readable than the previous one, this competition system has two advantages: the teams have two games less to play, which reduces the burden imposed on the players; and this limits the risk that a team tries to choose its opponent in the quarters by swinging its last group game.
The format of the beach volleyball tournament remains the same as in Tokyo.
