Provincial dek hockey tournament: Lac-Saint-Jean takes all the honors

The 2022 dek hockey season in Lac-Saint-Jean ended on a high note, as the region won top honors in all categories at the provincial tournament held in Saint-Prime on July 30.

This tournament, organized by the organization Dek-ô-Lac, a group of the best players from Lac-Saint-Jean, Saguenay and Quebec.

“It’s an elite tournament, so we had a selection camp a few weeks earlier to train our teams in each category. More than a hundred players participated in the camp, and there were 90 in the end to have been selected”, indicates the owner of Deck-ô-Lac, Yohann Gagné.

12 teams were formed in Lac-Saint-Jean in the Novice, Atom, Pee-Wee, Bantam, Midget categories and in the Women’s category.

These 12 teams will also have improved the surprise, as they won the honors in each of the categories during the tournament.

“It’s a surprise all the same to see that we have won everywhere like that! Quebec also arrived with very good teams. Our coaches did a great job with the youngsters, they had practice time together before the tournament, the players knew each other well, so that certainly gave us an advantage! »

A growing sport

This success is not a fluke, according to Yohann Gagné. Dek hockey has been steadily gaining momentum over the past few years around Lac-Saint-Jean, and the level of play is getting higher and higher.

“With Dek-ô-Lac also, we were able to install a structure around the lake that promotes better development of this sport. Each season, we notice that there are always more registrations, which brings the caliber of play to rise as well.»

Moreover, this season, Dek-ô-Lac has reached the milestone of 700 registrations all around the lake.

In Saint-Prime alone, registrations have gone from 115 players last year to 200 this season. A Dolbeau-Mistassini, we went from 90 registrations to 135, and in Alma and Saint-Nazaire, which joined the circuit this summer, 150 players registered.

“The next step for next year would be to develop more tournaments. Also, on one of the discussions with Saguenay in order to offer them our services, concerted with them to push the sport even higher on their side of the region as well. We are not in competition with them, we want to work together and we are looking at how we could work for next year. »
