Do strong heat and recovery go hand in hand?
We would have preferred to have more normal temperatures to resume, 30-31 degrees, that would have been perfect […] On the first days, we would have liked the players to be more comfortable, it put a little spoke in the wheels. But in the end, we know that the hot weather will accompany us in the off-season and the start of the season. The stages of the Supersevens (in August, editor’s note) occur under very high temperatures. And it’s a safe bet, given the climate change, that in September when the Top 14 resumes, it’s the same story. So we find ourselves playing more and more in these climatic conditions. From time to time, periods of intense heat can be a real asset in preparing players for these hostile environments.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of such weather?
The heat has a positive impact on the speed aspects, it will help on the sessions described above. Conversely, we will dehydrate more easily and quickly. There will also be a difficulty in capturing the oxygen in the air, so on all the energy concepts, the repetition of efforts, you see players more quickly with their hands on their hips. It’s inevitable, with the heat, you are more quickly out of breath.
How do these temperatures impact the organization of your days?
It changes the game because we train a little later in the evening to look for “coolness”, in any case so as not to be on the ground during the hottest hours of the day. It suits us from a planning point of view because it allows us to distance our strength training in the morning from our energy sessions in the afternoon. As a result, there are real gains in each of the sectors.
But there are also some drawbacks…
Dehydration will cause you some muscle pain and lower your performance. It is necessary on all that so we try to put things in place to avoid the dehydration of a part and especially that the organisms do not rise too much in temperature. If we manage to fight well against it, by hydrating well and cooling the guys down well with sufficient break times, the temperature has a bit of an impact.
What are you putting in place to achieve this?
We are considering a lot of water, places where players can both cool off by splashing water or using cold towels. Thursday, we also opened the jets so that they water each other. Either way, you can’t stop the heat. The only solution would be to train very early in the morning, but that would be to the detriment of the guys’ sleep… So we arbitrate on these different parameters.
Have some players suffered major “climate shocks”?
Many players were on vacation or with family in less hot places. So acclimatization to the climate here is difficult. For those who have had a holiday in the sun, the transition happens quite quickly. But for those who have gone back to the UK or gone to Australia, where it’s winter right now, it’s funny to arrive and find yourself with 37, 38 degrees, or even more. The body has to relearn how to endure and fight against it.
Does he suffer from small unsuspected sores in these periods?
With the heat, the ground is hard so on some bulbs, genes linked to that.
Can you imagine more drastic solutions if the thermometer continued to panic?
Maybe if we were to be even hotter, we would reverse it: we would do the field training earlier in the morning and the bodybuilding in the cool indoors in the afternoon. It is envisaged if the temperatures continue to increase durably.
The Section in Oloron then Orthez
This summer, like the previous one and throughout the last season, the Paloise Section will relocate some training sessions to the grounds of other Bearn clubs. Thus, on Friday July 22, the Green and White will go to Oloron, before going hiking in the Ossau valley in stride. Then, on Friday 29, they will go to Orthez.
