Smith wins Chicago Tournament

The Aussie won his first title on the dissident LIV professional circuit.

Australian Cameron Smith, defending British Open champion, won his first LIV Golf title on Sunday, beating Dustin Johnson and Peter Uihlein in the home stretch of the Chicago tournament.

Smith returned a 69 (-3) to finish 13 under in the 54-hole tournament at Rich Harvest Farms.

The current world number three finished with back-to-back birdies, the last from 6 yards, to beat two-time major-tournament winner Johnson and Uihlein by three strokes.

Nine weeks after winning the Claret Jug in St. Andrews, Smith said he needed a victory to send a message to those who criticized his decision to move from the PGA Tour to the Saudi Tour.

I think I had to prove to myself and other people that I’m a great player, that I’m here to win golf tournaments“, highlighted the 29-year-old golfer.

This year’s birth of the dissident LIV professional circuit, largely financed by Saudi Arabia, has been tearing the golfing world apart for months. Several big names in the sport, like Smith in the wake of Dustin Johnson, joined him at the expense of the PGA Tour, which retaliated by excluding these defectors.

In order to attract a maximum of high-level players, the LIV has set up endowments of 25 million dollars per event. Recalling the Chicago tournament, the fifth of eight supposed competitions this season, Smith pocketed $4 million.
