When deciding for the honorary title of GOAT, the debate still rages between Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer. The three players have pushed the competition to such a high level that they have exceeded the bar of 20 Grand Slam titles, thus exploding Pete Sampras’ record and his 14 titles a few years ago already. And the recent victory of Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon had the gift of reviving the debate, even if Mats Wilander wishes to base himself on other criteria than the prize list to decide.
With his last two coronations at theAustralian Open and to Roland Garros, Rafael Nadal having widened a considerable gap with its two rivals in the race for the number of titles in Grand Slam. The Spaniard has raised his record to 22 coronations. But Novak Djokovic recalled that he was still present during this edition of Wimbledon. After not being able to participate in theAustralian Open because of a lack of visa and his failure in the quarter-finals of Roland Garros, the Serb was determined to retain his title in London. And he did it brilliantly, winning the final against Nick Kyrgios on July 10 (4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6). The trophy of Wimbledon so stay one more year with Novak Djokovic (he has held it since 2018). Thanks to his new victory on British soil, Nole returned to a length of Rafael Nadal since he is now at 21 titles in Grand Slamgetting ahead Roger Federer and his 20 coronations at the same time. It also served to revive the GOAT debate, which Rafael Nadal seemed to dominate after Roland Garros a few weeks ago. The choice is always quite tricky when choosing the best player in history, first with the Big 3 but also with the other legends like Pete Sampras, Bjorn Borg, Andre Agassi or Rod Laver.

“All three had their three or four years where they dominated”
Mats Wilander is also one of the players who have marked the history of tennis. But the Swede knows he is no match for Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer. Today’s 57-year-old man is therefore content to be a simple spectator, and believes that the participation (or not) of the Serb in theU.S. Open will be very important as he said in comments reported by We love tennis : “ The real question now is whether Novak is allowed to go and play the US Open due to his vaccination status, which is very important. Does it really have to matter in the end, who wins the GOAT title race? Who is the greatest of all time? I don’t think about it anymore. All three had their three or four years when they were made. »
“We have the privilege of being witnesses”
Afterwards, Mats Wilander admitted to considering himself lucky to be able to see the rivalry between Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer and doesn’t really care anymore about the GOAT debate regarding these three players: “Now, there are back and forth between Rafa and Novak and we have the privilege of witnessing it. For me, personally, I no longer care who will end up with the most Grand Slam titles. A few years ago, I would have said that numbers were very important, but it seems that in recent years we have started to talk about dynamics in their careers.»
The debate still rages
Whether Mats Wilander wishes to base itself on other points than the number of Grand Slam winners to determine the best player between Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer, this criterion remains at the center of the GOAT debate. At 35, 36 and 40, the Serbian, Spaniard and Swiss are getting closer and closer to the end of their respective careers. They therefore have little time left to put themselves to their advantage. With 22 sacred fr Grand Slam, Rafael Nadal has a slight lead over its two rivals. But’U.S. Open could allow Novak Djokovic to return to equality with the native of Manacor, provided that he can participate despite his vaccination situation. The next tournaments will most certainly be decisive in the race for the GOAT title.
