Tennis. The fashion of padel wins Brittany – Tennis

When he stays in Concarneau, where his wife is from, it is not uncommon to see Didier Deschamps come and play a padel match on the courts of Tennis Padel Concarneau. The coach of the French football team is a fan of this emerging sport, which is more fun and accessible than tennis. He even had a track installed (we are talking about a track and not a court) at his home in the south of France.

His former teammate in blue Zinédine Zidane has a sports center in Istres, with six tracks.

An easy sport

“It’s a sport that is easy. I say easy, without being pejorative, reveals Arnaud Di Pasquale, director of the Parisian tournament and of the padel mission for the FFT. Everyone will hit, touch, return the ball and make quick rallies. So it’s encouraged to say “I can do it right away”, which is very rare in sport. It becomes playful and very entertaining. And at the highest level, it can become spectacular.

“You don’t need to have too much technical background to play and have fun at padel, adds Arzel Mévellec, president of Tennis Padel Concarneau. For some tennis players, it is even frustrating, because they can be beaten in padel by a beginner when it could never happen on a tennis court”.

Three minutes racquet in hand

“Six years ago, when padel arrived in Brittany, we did a test with the secretaries of the League. After three minutes, they were already doing very well with racket in hand, ”adds the director of the Ligue de Bretagne de tennis, Matthieu Lesaint.

In Concarneau, it’s not just the coach of the France team. Footballers from US Concarneau (National) are also regular customers, like their captain Guillaume Jannez, who takes advantage of them during the summer break. “In tennis, I can’t hold the rally. There, I started having fun after a game or two and you quickly get into the game. You can play a game for an hour and a half without then being broken all over. »

300,000 practitioners in France, including 3,000 in Brittany

Accessible, friendly, fun, intergenerational, padel has everything to please and would affect nearly 300,000 practitioners in France, still far from the four million Spaniards already conquered. But its development is exponential, as indicated by the figures from the Padelonomics site. In four years, the number of tracks has doubled to almost 1,200 in January. And by the Olympic Games, the goal is to create 500 new ones.

In Brittany, as in the other regions of northern France, the practice is less developed and there are fewer trails. “The regions of southern France are the engine of padel. This is where it developed in the 1990s. There is a larger pool of racquet players. And the climate makes it possible to invest in low-cost outdoor structures. In Brittany, padel has so far rather developed outdoors, which is nonsense given the climate ”, underlines Romain Taupin, of the Padelonomics site.

Brittany actually has 31 trails (2.6% of facilities in France) for around 3,000 practitioners (1% of the national total). “We lack covered structures. But today, there is not a project to create indoor tennis courts without it being associated with a padel track, ”says Matthieu Lesaint.

It’s off to the track!

And there is no lack of projects in progress: three indoor tracks implemented for September 2023 in addition to the two outdoor ones in Concarneau, but also two outdoor tracks carried out in the spring of 2023 with the renovation of the indoor tennis courts in Quimperlé?, an additional track in Fouesnant , two exteriors in Quimper, not to mention other projects in Bénodet, Lorient, Vannes, Elven, Saint-Brieuc, Châteaubourg.

“Padel is a discipline associated with tennis as beach tennis can be, but it is a real vector of development for clubs, continues Matthieu Lesaint. In 2023, the Federation plans to make a distinction in its number of licensees between tennis and padel. »

“At the beginning, it was very confidential. But today, padel is booming, in the process of emancipating itself from tennis, ”adds Arnaud Di Pasquale.

How does it play?
Created at the end of the 1960s in Mexico, padel is a sport that is practiced two against two on a blue track, a court smaller than that used for tennis and partitioned by four windows which are used for the rebounds of the balls. Points are calculated the same way (15-30-40-game) and it takes six games to win a set and two winning sets to win a match.

Dylan Guichard, N.1 Breton
This year, the League of Brittany organized its third championship of Brittany. And as in the first two editions in 2019 and 2021, it was the Breton N.1 and Rennais Dylan Guichard (national N.33) who won, this time associated with Ludovic Cancel, when he had won the first two titles with former French junior tennis champion Vincent Sapène. This year, the League also set up the first interclub championships in Brittany.
