A tasty mix between squash and tennis, padel is the new star of racket sports. And this weekend, in Paris, ends the first edition of the Greenweez Paris Premier Padel Major, an international tournament. The greatest players in the world compete on the Philippe Chatrier court at Roland Garros.
Last Sunday, since the central court of Roland-Garros was metamorphosed. It hosts a padel court, 10mx20m, surrounded by glass. Players compete in doubles, in matches with two winning sets. A rhythmic game, which delights the spectators: “It’s very spectacular, with smashes, drop shots, it’s beautiful to watch, enthuses Alix. Party atmosphere on the center court
The Philippe Chatrier stadium is not full, but the public is white-hot. After each point disputed, the fans stand up, applaud. And the fanfare of the ‘We are Tennis fan Academy’, which normally animates during the fortnight of Roland-Garros, provides the atmosphere. Laurent leads the troupe with his drum: “It’s a crazy, dynamic, enthusiastic audience. The show is up to the event, we enjoy ourselves.”
A very accessible sport
Appeared in the 70s in Mexico, padel developed late in France. Today, on account 30,000 licensees. A number that should increase further according to Arnaud di Pasquale, tournament director: “It’s a very accessible sport, everyone has fun, we take pleasure right away. When we play, we have this feeling of being good, even when you’re not very good, and that’s rare.”
The French Tennis Federation is therefore taking advantage of the development of this sport accessible to all to organize this great tournament, in the most beautiful enclosure possible. A project led by the former tennis player, appointed head of the padel mission: “There was a turn to take, and we absolutely did not want to miss it. There are more and more spectators, it is very encouraged. It is a great success to have brought the padel spirit to Roland-Garros.”
This Sunday, place in the final, without French, all eliminated from the second round. On the program, a duel between Argentinians and Spaniards, to end the week in style.
