Public funding for the Canadian Ice Hockey Federation was suspended on Wednesday June 22 by the government. She is indeed suspected of having wanted to hide a gang rape committed by eight players in 2018. A young woman, now 24, accuses them.
“Their handling of the event is extremely troubling and concerning”declared in front of the journalists the Minister of Sports, Pascale St-Onge, who believes that the federation perpetuates the “culture of silence”. On Monday, the federation had to explain itself to a parliamentary commission after revelations in the press in recent weeks, without convincing the minister.
For the minister, the leaders of the organization had a reaction “inappropriate” and “from another era”. The investigation has not, in fact, been completed and all the players, whose names are not known, did not participate. According to the victim, several players involved in this case have already played in the prestigious National Hockey League.
Hockey Canada has confirmed that a financial agreement was reached between the federation and the young woman a few years ago, but its general manager has certified that no public funds were used in this settlement. Hockey Canada has received approximately C$14 million (€10.2 million) over the past two years from the federal government.
