A smell of smoke was registered in Chalon-sur-Saône this Saturday evening. It came from a major fire that broke out in front of the northern commercial area. The fire indeed took place around 9:30 p.m. in the Hôtel de la Thalie, which is being renovated, rue François-Prétheau.
It was the painters carrying out the renovation who, on returning from their dinner break, discovered the building in flames and alerted the fire brigade.
The second floor ignited as well as a large part of the roof. The entire framework of the hotel is giving up despite the intervention of multiple firefighters on the scene. The large ladder was deployed to prevent the flames from consuming even faster.
At 11:15 p.m., the eastern part of the building also began to catch fire, while only the remains of the structure on the western side of the hotel could be seen.
It was already a hotel used by the Department to accommodate unaccompanied minors. The renovation, which began a few months ago, was almost complete and the establishment should open in a month. All the equipment and furniture had already been purchased and everything was ready to receive future customers.
The building was empty
The firefighters carried out reconnaissance and no injuries were reported, since the building was empty at the time of the fire. Three vans from the department as well as two ladders were mobilized. More than forty firefighters were dispatched to the scene. Enedis teams are also on site. The neighborhood is cordoned off on either side, so it is recommended to avoid the area.
The cause of the accident is currently unknown.
