The World goes through a miracle against the Egyptian ogre

After the humiliating defeat against Guinea (22-28) in their first match of CAN 2022, which is currently taking place in Egypt, the national seven had to react against Gabon. It’s chosen done, but it was hard: 25-23 victory which propels Algeria into the 1/4 final against the host country.

Before the match against Gabon, the Algerian team was not calm. It must be remembered that in 2018, during the CAN on his land, the seven Gabonese had twice beaten the Fennecs. Moreover, after their surprise loss to the Guinea during the 1st day of the group stage, the players and the staff were immersed in great doubt.

As we feared for this second day, the match against Gabon started with difficulty for the protégés of Raba Gherbi. Despite some good performances like Zohir Naim we Abdelkader Rahim, we are far from being serene in the Algerian camp. Moreover, it was on two cannon shots that the Greens, dressed in red for the occasion, took a slight lead at halftime (16-12).

In the second half, the same shortcomings as against the Guinea appeared. A very feverish defense, an unimaginative offensive sector and countless individual errors, allowed teammates to Mehdi Lacritick to recall the score and even give cold sweats to lovers of the little green ball.

Without the marvelous parades of the Algerian goalkeeper, Khelifa Ghedhbane, designated man of the match, the Algerians would undoubtedly have suffered another painful setback. In the end, a difficult victory (25-23) for the Greens who joined Guinean Sily, first in group B, in the quarter-finals.

No chance against Egypt?

The teammates of Messaoud Berkous will be opposed this Friday, July 15 (7:00 p.m. DZ) to the Egyptian ogre. Firmly established at the top of the global basket, the Pharaohs are titleholders and undefeated in Africa. The task therefore seems impossible to the Greens who are far from their best level and very weakened by the absence of pillars like Abdi, Daoud or Hadj Sadokwho has just added to the list of renowned wounded.

Egypt is a big favourite. For this match, a ticket for the next World Cup 2023 is at stake. The first five of the final African ranking will go to Poland and in Sweden. Algeria was able to straighten the shot against the Gabon, players to take responsibility against the host of the competition but what’s the point? With a distressing level of play and a federation completely in the woods, an elimination from the World Cup would undoubtedly be beneficial to reset all the counters to zero.
