WTA Lausanne: Bencic leaves without shining – rts.ch

For the third time in three editions, the Ladies Open will not see a Swiss competing in the semi-finals. Like Simona Waltert earlier today, Belinda Bencic (WTA 13) was eliminated.

In Lausanne, the Olympic champion lost 6-3 7-6 (7/2) to Petra Martic (WTA 85). Beaten twice by Belinda Bencic last year, the Croatian did not have to pull out all the stops to take her revenge. Belinda Bencic has, indeed, delivered a very mediocre performance like the tie-break of the second set which sealed her fate.

With 2 double faults, an unforced error on the backhand and another on the forehand, she literally offered 4 out of 7 points to her opponent. Led 6-3 4-2, Belinda Bencic could believe for a moment in victory when she had the advantage 5-4 in the second set. It was the only time in the match where she was ahead. But she was not to find the opening to raise before accusing this terrible blackout in the tie-break.

Petra Martic will face Caroline Garcia (WTA 48) in the semi-final. Victorious 6-4 6-1 over the Spaniard Sara Sorribes Tormo (WTA 43), the Lyonnaise now advances as the favorite n°1 of the Lausanne tournament.
